Finding purpose in the woods

I have been very quiet for a while now as I was involved in the theater production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. I was able to meet the most amazingly talented individuals and get back on stage, which is one of my most favorite places in the world to be!

There is something about waiting in the wings, watching the house lights fade, the stage ones come up and the first note of the first song that brings an awakening of my spirit that I cannot explain. It is not even about the audience cheering and clapping, but knowing that for those few moments on stage you are part of something bigger than yourself.

Having said that I was challenged greatly when I got a call at 3pm on opening day to stand in for the role of Little Red’s granny and the giant’s voice over as unfortunately the lady playing that role was in hospital. So I went from being a ghost in a tree to having to play three characters. That is when it really hit me, this is my passion, my love, its what drives me, even without my sleep, I can keep going because its what gives me the energy to get up in the morning. When I tell people that I am doing this for fun, without pay, they often think I am crazy. However, people run the Comrades or hike Mount Everest for fun, they train every day, give up time, miss out on festivities, all in the name of passion.

As the theme throughout the show so rightfully states:

Into the woods,
It’s time to go,
It may be all
In vain, you/I know.
Into the woods-
But even so,
I have to take the journey.

Take your own trip into the woods, make that journey, because you never know what you might discover along the way. So go do what energizes you, what drives you, what makes you realize that there is something bigger than just you in the world, and do it with your whole heart!

Love and adventures everyone,

Jade
